The upper trace is the left-hand channel and the lower trace the right.  You probably clicked on the 'play left / right channel only' button in the toolbar to get the display looking like that (grey, in that context, means 'disabled').

The paler green is a simplified version of the waveform display which is intended to help identify track breaks (not sure if it helps much).  You can turn it off via Menu -> Options -> Cursor Options -> Show Simplified Waveform Display if you don't like it.

Yes, that's how it works.  And by all means be noisy.

Quite possibly, it doesn't always receive the attention it deserves.

Technical Support / Interpreting the waveform disp...

I feel like this must be a dumb question but I can't find it documented anywhere.  If you can point me to there I'd really appreciate it.

When I edit my recordings, cleaning up noise and splitting tracks, the waveform display is really important, and I love the way it works.  But there's something I can't help feeling I must be missing.

First, are the upper and lower before and after, or different channels?  If the latter, why are they so different?  Also, what do the colors mean?  I see two kinds of green, plus grey.

Am I doing something wrong?  Here's a picture example:

Thanks!

Not in any way that makes mention of the issue I was trying to address.

Having written software and documentation in years past, I sympathise with your challenge, and appreciate your patience.

That's a pretty good idea. I have Audacity installed which I've used for other things, but it didn't occur to me to use it for this. Thanks! (But having the feature in Vinyl Studio would still be nice. :))

For surgery like this, I use Audacity,  It's free, and works quite well for cutting and pasting audio. In your case I'd just record the one bad track and paste it in, then re-import into VS and re-export the album.

Vinyl Studio has helpful documentation under Help -> Importing, Exporting and Converting files.

I FOUND IT!!  On the Record screen, in the "Wait for Needle Down" section, there is a setting labelled "Needle up timeout (sec)".  I set it to 45, and tested it with the next record flip.  Perfect!

I'm probably blind, but I don't see it referenced in the online help.

Technical Support / Re: How to Delete a Wav file ?
Last post by Geek - March 26, 2026, 05:45:23 PM
Thanks for the information given. I actually got into a right mess because I deleted tracks but found they were still there and I wasn't sure whether the system had deleted them or not. I then tried to delete from the list of tracks above and wondered if this would work.v When I went back to the various tracks that I had imported as a list, I found that the tracks are gone completely haywire and we're all jumbled upand also the spits in the track were all over the place! Clearly there is a way of deleting a track without causing so much chaos. I then read that if you use the Alt key when deleting that things stay pretty much static. I got in such a mess that I had to start all over again. I've even decided that it was best if I deleted the track before importing. This was a lesson learned.
