Hi,

Sorry for the delay - I missed this.

I think you're talking about the position of the Preamp sliders, and to see these for (say) side 2, just select side 2 from the dropdown in the Cleanup Audio window.

OK, thanks, we'll take a look.  You can safely delete the .wav.crd file

Technical Support / Re: Collection Identification
Last post by LateJunction - October 26, 2025, 11:03:41 AM
I assume that, in the final analysis, the functional changes you make to VS must reflect, to some degee, the feedback you receive in this forum. I would like to comment on this specific aspect ('Collection Identification'):

Even after all these years of using VS (because there is no comparable alternative), I still stumble over the problems caused by failing to open the intended collection before I start recording a new album. Also, being intellectually incapable of understanding the value of 'rtfm' (or video in this case), I recently tried my own approach to moving an album from an inappropriate collection. After a day of trying this method  I decided it was quicker to re-record the album and then spend another few hours clearing up the mess within VS's 'database' that I had made.

All this coould have been avoided if the product had made it very clear to me what collection I was working in.

As an adjunct problem, I just discovered the issue of  making a recording after a very long break from using VS. After a rebuild of the laptop I use for VS I started afresh with newly purchased VS Premium but forgot about the defaults used by VS (and documented well, it must be said). So I ended up with my recording in a collection called 'My Albums', within a folder called 'My Recordings', in the documents folder on my C drive - where none of the other 250+ albums I have recorded reside (on a large external drive). Fortunately, with the information you have documented in the Help file, I did finally relocate these recordings. A video on how to move a collection and its included albums from one drive to another would be useful

Are you cleaning your albums??? I'm using a method that was developed by a technical expert for the Navy. He was involved in all the clean systems on board ships, such as oxygen, nitrogen ......etc. It is quite the read at around 200 pages.

You don't have to do everything in his article, you a pick the steps that work for you and the time you want to spend cleaning. He gets into ultrasonic cleaner if you want the cleanest vinyl and don't mind spending some money.

Page down to the bottom of the web page to download the PDF file.

I use 14 inch cake pans and 4 different cleaning and rinsing solutions. I added one more step since the photos were taken.

I did this with a toothpick, but have yet to play the record to check the outcome. This record was not skipping, but had some kind substance on the surface that did not come off with cleaning.

I purchased a Tomlov digital microscope to help with this and it was a big help. It still has a $60 off coupon making the cost $239. With the microscope it was obvious that I was breaking loose something deposited on the surface.

I know some people have been successful at using a sewing needle to fix a repeat or skip, but that would require a microscope for sure.

Pics are taken with the Tomlov microscope.

Technical Support / Batch Conversion leaves old.cr...

When I convert files in the collection folder, VinylStudio deletes the old file after creating the new file but leaves the old .crd file.

So I end up with:

Volume in drive C is Windows
 Volume Serial Number is C4E0-B6A5

 Directory of C:\Users\AndyJ\VinylStudio\MyCollection

24/10/2025  16:05       205,797,642 Charlie_Parker~Bird_Lives-_The_Complete_Dial_Masters~side1.mp3
24/10/2025  16:05           277,404 Charlie_Parker~Bird_Lives-_The_Complete_Dial_Masters~side1.mp3.crd
24/10/2025  15:54           277,404 Charlie_Parker~Bird_Lives-_The_Complete_Dial_Masters~side1.wav.crd
               3 File(s)    206,352,450 bytes
               0 Dir(s)  1,026,004,078,592 bytes free

The .crd files have the same contents:

Comparing files Charlie_Parker~Bird_Lives-_The_Complete_Dial_Masters~side1.mp3.crd and CHARLIE_PARKER~BIRD_LIVES-_THE_COMPLETE_DIAL_MASTERS~SIDE1.WAV.CRD
FC: no differences encountered

Has anyone tried this?
(From  SlickDiscs | Why are my vinyl records noisy?)

QuoteRoadblocks
Damage to vinyl that stops your music in its tracks. Some deep imperfections can cause the stylus to keep playing the same passage of music over and over again or even jump out of the groove entirely.
If you experience this, sadly there is a good chance your record is ruined, but you could still try the matchstick method:

  • Play your record, make note of where the stylus is hitting the 'roadblock'.
  • Grab your record and a matchstick (or any small piece of softwood will do).
  • Using the 'butt' end of the matchstick, rub the problem area of the record in the same direction as the grooves.
  • Test playback of the record to see if the stylus now tracks as it should.
  • Repeat the above steps if necessary.

If successful, you should find that your record is now able to play from start to finish by itself. You will still have some noise where you carried out the repair but at least you won't need to get up to advance the stylus!

Technical Support / How to see Normalization facto...
Last post by bshonbeck - October 08, 2025, 02:47:38 PM
I applied normalization to a double album set and had it configured to do each side separately.  Everything seems to have work well in that regard and the completion popup showed the four normalization factors that were applied.  However, later I wanted to see these factors.  When I open the Filter Settings popup, it shows what appears to be the Normalization factor for the first side but I don't see a way to get the factor for the other three sides.  What am I missing?

Paul,
I have been doing smart normalization. I will send you the two screen shots from Audacity. It seems like my problems did not start until I upgraded to the Pro Version in order to be able to experiment with recording in DSD.

Hi,

Have you tried 'smart normalisation'?  That attempts to avoid transients in between tracks.

Also, I would normalise to 0dB.
