Technical Support / Record flip dialog/popup
Last post by Brooksguy - September 12, 2025, 12:06:18 AM
I am a new VS user, using it to digitize LPs. The first few times I used it, a popup dialog appeared after the first side of the LP concluded, with instructions on how to proceed to record the second side. But after the first few times, this popup dialog has failed to appear again. I did not check a box to tell it not to appear again. I found the place to reset dialogs that had been disabled, and told it to reset, in case it was somehow accidentally disabled. But nothing has changed; still no mid-record dialog. I have been simply letting VS run in record mode, and quickly flipping the record and lowering the needle again. But I'm concerned that this does not give VS time to fully settle before the second side begins. How do I get the mid-record dialog back? Or do I even need to worry about it having gone missing? If it matters, I have the Pro version. Thanks for any help.

Actually, the exact numbers are unlikely to correspond because the way clips are detected differs in the two places.  But at least the same signal level is now being used.

The answer to your other question is 'how long is a piece of string?'  Maybe you can start recording and if you see the clip count going up reduce the recording level slightly.

Hi,

I would start one in the General Discussion forum.

Most of what you ask for is not possible but there are a couple of tricks which might help you:

1.  There's a button to display the track break markers in the Cleanup Audio Window in the toolbar beneath the the waveform display.

2.  You can toggle between the Cleanup Audio and Split Tracks windows by pressing back tick (`).

So (for example), position the cursor in the Split Tracks window and then press `

Thanks Paul for the reply.

Is there a thread for feature requests? I have some ideas that I think would be easy to implement that would help my workflow a good bit.

Thats good news!  So if I understand correctly, the next release will show more clips in the Cleanup Audio page to match what was tallied in the Recording window.

Can you give some guidance as to how many clips could be tolerated before the input level should be reduced?

Thanks!

We've looked into this now, in fact, and the definition of a clip was slightly different in the two cases.  This will be corrected in the next release.

As for setting the recording level, the difference between the two clip detection criteria was very small, so I would be guided by the number of clips reported while recording.

I agree, these likely were not audible.  However their high count causes me to think my input level is too high so I lessen it.  If the clip count is incorrectly high, then I have reduced the dynamic range of the recording unnecessarily.  For now, I will view the clips and clip count on the Cleanup Audio page to determine if a lower input level and re-recording is indicated.

Thanks, I'll take a look, although it's probably not audible in practise.  We're probably using (slightly) different criteria to report them in the two places in the code.
