~.exe and Adobe Reader 7
« on: October 07, 2008, 11:29:10 am »
I was working away on my PC the other day when ZoneAlarm popped up a box saying something like: '~.exe is trying to install itself to run every time you start your machine; do you want to let it do this?'.

Well, no I don't, so I downed tools and started to investigate.

It turned out that a virus had turned up in a PDF document.  I think this in turn came from one of those pop-up ads that are so annoying, but I'm not sure.  ZoneAlarm did not trap it directly but their second of line of defense did the trick, so hats off to ZA.  It saved my bacon and, despite the number of ignoreable warnings it generates, I find it very useful.  Every so often it find something genuinely dangerous (or, at least, suspicious).

What you should do, dear reader, is update to the latest version of Adobe Reader (version 9).  This is a free download from Adobe's website.  I imagine they have plugged this particular loophole.
