Title: Strange activity at startup

As a new user I'm puzzled. When I start VinylStudio I can enter the details, then select Record. At this point it spends 5 minutes (which is a very long time!) working the hard disc at full speed before presenting permission to put the needle down. Subsequent recordings (on the same day) don't need this. What on earth is going on?

No idea.  It's certainly not normal.  As a diagnostic, could you please download the following program and run it while VinylStudio is thrashing the disk:

http://www.alpinesoft.co.uk/VinylStudio/vsdump.exe

Then please email the file it produces to:

p DOT sanders AT alpinesoft DOT co DOT uk

and I will take a look.
