Noise issue with ripping vinyl to DSD256

My current set up for ripping vinyl is RME ADI-2 Pro A/D convertor. Phono stage is a Tom Tutay tube phono with RCA outputs. I am using Cardas RCA to XLR adapters to plug into input of RME. USB output of RME to MacBook Air (2020 version) with M1 running Sonoma 14.7.4. Running VinylStudio Pro 15.0.1. I have headphones plugged into both the RME and MacBook for monitoring.

I have been ripping vinyl for the last several years successfully at 24/352 with no issues.I recently upgraded to VinylStudio Pro to experiment with ripping to DSD (yes I am aware of the inability to edit DSD without converting to PCM). When I started to rip the first album at DSD256 I was getting a constant "motoring sound" on top of the music signal through the headphones connected to the Mac. This motoring sound was not heard from the headphones connected to the RME.

This motoring sound interfered with the "detect needle drop" function and I had to disable it to be able to start the recording. I thought initially this might be some artifact of the MacBook M1 chip having to do the D/A conversion of the DSD signal to output to the headphone jack.  After I completed the recording and pulled down the track info from Discogs it was apparent that the motoring sound was on the ripped recording as I could see no quiet gaps between songs.  I had previously ripped this new album at 24/352 so I know what it should have looked like.

So I lifted the needle off the record and used the "monitor recording" function in Vinyl studio to listen to the input with no record playing. That same motoring sound was present. I then switched whole thing over to PCM on the RME and WAV 24/352 in VinylStudio and the input was totally quiet from the headphones attached to the Mac.

Sorry for the long description. Any ideas on what the issue is here? Obviously I cannot rip albums to DSD with this situation. Thanks

As a quick follow up I connected the analog outputs of my Lumin A-1 streamer to the RME to see if the issue was somehow related to my tube phono pre..I got the same motoring sound through the headphones connected to the Mac. The headphones connected to the RME were silent.

Hi, my guess is a fault in the RME itself.  Could you please follow it up with them (they have a forum and are very responsive).

Paul,
Thanks...I discovered that my firmware level on the ADI-2 Pro was way back level. I updated to the latest and now the noise is gone. Yeah. So I went back and started to record at DSD256. It all seemed to be going so smoothly and then an error popped up that said:
There was an error while recording:
The incoming audio format changed

The RME display was still showing DSD256. Nothing had changed..Any thoughts on what might cause this? Thanks

I would check your USB connection - maybe use a different cable and don't connect via a hub.  Any errors there would cause this.
