Searching for noise between tracks

When I use the hiss filter, I normally use a sample I've taken from the gap between tracks usually between 2-5 seconds depending on what's available. Generally I get good results, but finding the right bit of the recording could be easier with a little help:

  • If VS could be made to show the track gaps, biggest to smallest or just to hop to the biggest gap.
  • Track markers were shown (optional?) on the cleanup screen
  • Adding fade outs to track markers means it's not possible to listen to the noise between tracks any more. It would be nice to have an option to continue to hear it..

Hi,

Thanks for this.  Track breaks are in fact visible in the Cleanup Audio window if you enable them.  There's a button in the toolbar beneath the waveform display to toggle this on and off.

The faders need more thought.  Thanks for bringing this up, but it's rather unusual to use them for anything other than live recordings where there is applause between tracks anyway.

Paul, I can't believe I missed it it's not like it's exactly hidden away.

I've started using the faders for normal albums because I found just using the breaks to be abrupt in some cases where there's a gradual fade in/out particularly at the start/end of an LP side where some of the worst noise noise can be found.

Eventually I experimented with more albums and got results I liked, so I stuck with it. I found they're generally useful for all albums, to give me a little declining silence at the start of a track and to fade out noisy end of tracks.

I'm sue there are other ways to do it, but this is what I ended up with. I'll go back and review the track splitting section in help to make sure I've understood the other options.

Revisiting this after a long hiatus:

Actually you can (listen to the noise between tracks), but only in the Cleanup Audio window.  Couple that with the ability to show track breaks (but not faders) in that window and I think you're pretty much there.
