After recording, splitting, and, occasionally, doing cleanup (usually via selections), I take the entire album's waveform and click on the green flag, listen to the startup of the track, click near the red flag at the end, listen to the end of that track and the beginning of the next track, click near the red flag, lather/rinse/repeat until the end of the album.
Is there a way to do this automatically? The one second option is close but doesn't automate the process across all the tracks on the album.
No, there's no way to automate that, although you can click on track names in the list of tracks to do something similar.
