Title: How to skip/silence part of a track without hiding or deleting it.
Post by: wallewek on March 13, 2026, 08:50:48 PM
I have a track from a damaged album with a section that repeated several times.

I want to silence or skip past that section just as though I had created a track break there, but I don't want to mess up the track list.   I also don't want to "delete" it (even though I know I can undelete it), because that hides it on the track display, and makes it hard to see what I'm doing as I set the exact segment I'm omitting from the final track.

Is there any way to do that?

Hi,

If it's in the middle of a track then cut-and-splice is the only way, sorry.

Thanks.  I also found that using ( and ) to jump exactly one rotation really helped.

Fortunately using the yellow markers and ^X and ^Z for testing the cut-and splice works reasonably well to allow choosing whether I've selected the exact right spot, undo and try again. It's just not as precise as the track split markers.

Too bad there's no way to use the track split markers as a non-split skip.  They work so nicely to trim noise between tracks, making it so easy to be precise.  I kind of mulled over the idea of making a temporary track split to allow precisely skipping the bad spot, deleting that spot and undoing the slit, but...

The splicing works well though.

@wallewek

Why do you dislike deleting a fraction of music? Just curious about your thoughts

Because if it's not done right it's noticeable.  And if I didn't care about that, why rip it at all?

When there's a repeating segment, if I clip it out cleanly it's inaudible.  And that should be possible.  It's just a little challenging to get the start and end points right with no marker.  Ideally it would work like track start/end markers.

I don't understand, are you using a selection (Yellow highlight). It's no different than dragging track breaks. But I'm sure you already know this.

He's right, it's more difficult to get a cut exactly right.  There is a trick to it though:

1.  Make your best guess and put in the cut.

2.  Listen to the result.

3.  If it's not good enough, undo the cut (Ctrl+Z) and drag the appropriate edge(s) of the selection.

4.  Repeat the cut (X).

5.  Repeat from step 2 until it's exactly right.

Right.  Having to cut the selection out and undo the cut works, but it's harder to be precise and adjust than if the yellow selection worked the way track markers do, setting a permanent marker you can move back and forth.  Once you've cut, you can't adjust.  And unfortunately, deleting a track messes up the track list.

Track markers are perfect to skip sound between tracks or sides; it's easy to use them to tweak lead-in and -out.  If one could have a non-splitting "skip" marker it would be ideal.  You could even use the (G) and (5) tools to check the settings; wouldn't have to delete anything, making it easy to go back and tweak later.

We are aware of all this :)  But we don't see an easy way of doing what you ask.
