Guide for Visually Impaired Users

VinylStudio - especially on the Mac - has a number of features which make it easier to use if you have a visual impairment. In particular, there are a number of hotkeys to navigate the waveform display which help with track splitting, and, on the Mac, VoiceOver announcements help you keep track of where you are.

Please note that, on the Mac, use Command instead of Control, except where otherwise stated.

The hotkeys available in the Split Tracks window are:

Space bar Starts playing from the current cursor position. Press again to stop.
Ctrl+L Selects classic mode. In classic mode, the cursor will not return to the starting point when you stop playing.
Ctrl+M Selects anchor mode. In anchor mode, the cursor will return to the starting point when you stop playing. You can pause and resume playback in anchor mode by pressing the hash key.
G Plays a a few seconds either side of the current cursor position or track break. Stop playback before using this function.
Ctrl+T Stop playing at the next end-of-track marker.
+ Zoom in, centering the display at the current cursor position. You can also zoom in and out with the scroll wheel. The 'nudge' functions become more fine-grained as you zoom in.
- Zoom out.
A Zoom all the way out (so that the entire recording is visible).
B Insert a trackbreak at the current cursor position. You can do this while recording if you wish, which can be handy for live albums.
Del or backspace Delete the trackbreak under the cursor.

6 Remember the current zoom level and cursor position.
7 Return to the zoom level saved above.
8 Return to the cursor position saved above.
Shift-left arrow Nudge the cursor left in small increments. Zoom in for finer control, hold down the tab key to nudge in larger increments.

Most of the above hotkeys are also available in the Cleanup Audio window, along with the following:

] Move the cursor to the next yellow marker.

} Move the cursor to the next click.
{ Move the cursor to the previous click.
G Plays a brief snatch of music spanning 1 second either side of the current cursor position.
M Insert a yellow marker at the current cursor position. This lets you mark a particular spot that you might want to come back to later. To delete a marker, jump to it and press D. Markers also appear in the corrections list, and you can select a marker by selecting it in the list.
N Scan the recording for clicks.
L Scan the recording for clips.
F Opens the filter settings dialog, which allows you to filter out tape hiss, hum and rumble, and includes a graphic equaliser.

And finally:

Alt+1 through Alt+5 Step through the windows in order.
Ctrl+W Tells you which window you're in (Mac only, turn on VoiceOver).
Ctrl+V (*not* Cmd+V) Toggles VoiceOver verbose mode (Mac only). Turning it off will reduce the amount of information that VinylStudio gives you as you tab through a dialog and a few other places.
